Enterprise architecture is the practice of applying comprehensive and rigorous methods to describing an organization. While the origins of EA were first applied to information systems by Zachman in 1987, EA has grown to encompass the entire organization. Aspects such as business process, data, automation, tools and technologies, standards and organizational structure are modeled by EA. EA is used to guide or “align” all enterprise activities and investments to the strategic goals of the organization.
Constellation has particular expertise in FEA, or Federal Enterprise Architecture as practiced by the federal government of the United States. This includes frameworks such as FEAF (Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework) and DODAF (Department of Defense Architecture Framework). It also includes closely related practices such as CPIC (Capital Planning Investment Control).
One key goal of FEA and commercial EA is to transform the enterprise to take advantage of new technology. Of particular interest today are Service Component Based Architecture and Service Oriented Architecture. Service Oriented Architecture is software design or architecture to utilize web services. By combining web services into reusable packages SOA becomes SCBA. SCBA forms a portion of the technology area of an enterprise architecture designed to achieve return on investment from web services.
